Five Ten Innovation

Five Ten introduced the world to high-friction Stealth rubber nearly 30 years ago. At first it was rock climbers, alpinists and avid hikers who took advantage of the technically-advanced, high-friction footwear. However, as quickly as a climber can leap from one outcrop to the next, other adventure athletes demanded shoes for their own sports. Then, like now, rock climbers were multi-sport athletes. They Kayaked down waterfalls and explored single tracks with their mountain bikes. It was obvious that the relationship between the artists and the brand had become a way of life.

In the bike world, word spread like wildfire that Stealth upped the performance of flat pedals. In 2000, the first flat pedal mountain bike shoe with Stealth rubber soles was backorders a month before it hit the shelves. Downhill legend Chris Kovarik raced with the prototype Stealth-soled shoes in the 2002 World Cup, winning the overall title. The same year, Sam Hill was crowned Junior World Champion using his Five Tens. In 2003, Nathan Rennie captured the overall UCI World Cup Title wearing Five Ten, while Sam Hill demolished the junior men’s field to defend his title – despite an epic crash in his final run. Over the next decade, riders wearing Five Ten shoes crushed the podium in downhill races, with Minnar, Rennie, Hill and Kovarik leading the pack. In 2009, Minnaar woke up the bike world with the introduction of his signature shoe, a category embraced by clip-in riders worldwide.

For 2013, Five Ten is upping the ante with the new Freerider VXi. The VXi introduces true innovation with the new Stealth Contact outsole. Treadless under the ball of the foot for superior float, with legendary Freeride Dotty treat on the heel and toe, the shoe is a more precise way to adjust the foot on the fly without tread obstruction. Stealth outsoles also provide up to six times the vibration dampening of other rubbers – significant for drops and trick riding. Stealth Contact represents the next generation in Five Ten bike innovation – a technology that’s sure to dominate the World Cup circuit, bike parks and the urban commute categories.

Furthermore, 2013 see’s the launch of Five Ten’s Stealth Mi6 formula. Created for Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible film franchise, the unique, ultra soft (Shore A 45-51) Stealth Mi6 formula was engineered to exhibit extraordinary visco-elastic properties while retaining the durability of rubbers twice it’s stiffness. Low resilience (dampening) allows for longer, fatigue-free performance and comfort – stone to steel.

Maximum friction with much lower forces. Stick quicker and stronger – whether adjusting your feet on the pedal, or throwing a hard to reach toe catch, Mi6 has unbeatable friction on virtually any surface – glass, rock, metal, etc. When used as a rand, it brings yet another innovation to the table by allowing the foot to sit in a natural, supported, comfortable yet powerful position.

The Stealth Difference

Stealth® originally set out to develop a rubber that would actually improve climbing by increasing the amount of body weight rubber could bear before its bond broke away from steep rock faces. After several years of research and experimentation, Stealth® rubber was born. Stealth’s® unparalleled success in the climbing world made other athletes take note. The demand for other Stealth® sport applications was so high that Charles Cole returned to the lab to develop additional sport-specific formulas. The development of a new formula involves years of field-testing, with some of the worlds’ best athletes using these sport-specific compounds in applications from water and snow to rock and trail. Each of the rubbers in the Stealth® family is specially formulated to excel in specific conditions, but they all share Stealth’s® unique blend of high friction and shock absorption. The difference between Stealth® and other brands on the market is obvious. Quite simply, Stealth® provides the best friction on earth.
