MAMIL

mamilMost of you cyclists out there will have heard of the acronym MAMIL, but what does it actually stand for? Quite simply it stands for Middle-Aged Men in Lycra. You know, that mid-life crisis type thing us cyclists go through, some earlier than others I may add.

So have you gained the MAMIL status yet or are you slowly working towards it, holding onto your dignity for as long as you can? It’s going to happen sooner or later so it’s time to embrace it and stride out with your head held high and your cycle helmet held low, covering your nether regions.

What’s all the fuss about, I mean all the pro riders wear lycra and no-one bats an eyelid at them do they? Mmmm could it be because they have a fat content which is the same as the usual score Great Britain get in the Euroviion song contest, nil poi! Some of them really do look like they could do with a good old feed!

Built for lycra?

Built for lycra?

I bet those MAMIL’s out there started off just like I did, being adamant that you’d would never be seen dead in lycra, well, in public anyway! 😉 Soon that would fade and you’d sneak a pair of lycra shorts on under those baggies, secretly loving the the feel of the lycra beneath and enjoying the extra padding it offered on those longer cycles. Before you knew it you had grown into a full blown MAMIL and didn’t give a hoot what people thought, even starting to wear replica team kit, emulating your cycling heroes, just on a slightly larger scale!

Wearing lycra on your bike has now become second nature and you manage to ignore the harsh and unjust comments that inevitably come your way from your wife every time you leave the house to spend some quality time with the real love of your life……. your bike! Deep down your wife/partner is just jealous because they know you look better in lycra than they do! 😉

If you can relate to this post, well done, you’re a fully fledged MAMIL, something you should be proud of. If you haven’t quite made that transition yet, don’t worry it WILL happen very soon, at least you know what to expect and can start to deal with the emotional side attached to the unjust comments you’ll inevitably endure from your so called loved one. My advice, ditch the loved one and buy a 2nd bike!

On that note, we sell bikes! 😉
